NUCLEAR
ISOTOPE GENERATOR
![]()
This Cs-137/Ba-137m Isotope Generator is used to conduct experiment in schools and universities to demonstrate the properties of radioactive decay. Based on the original Union Carbide patented design, it offers exceptional performance combined with ease of use and safe operation.

Each generator contains 10uCi. of Cs-137 which represents one Exempt Quantity making it free from specific State and Federal licensing. The generator can produce up to 1000 small aliquots of the short lived Ba-137m isotope with a half-life of 2.6 minutes. Each generator is supplied with 250 ml of eluting solution (0.9% NaCl) and additional solution may be ordered separately. (see below)
The parent isotope Cs-137 with a half-life of 30.1 years beta decays (94.6%) to the metastable state of Ba-137m. This further decays by gamma emission (662 keV) with a half-life of 2.6 min. to the stable Ba-137 element. During elution, the Ba-137m is selectively "milked" from the generator leaving behind the Cs-137 parent. Regeneration of the Ba-137m occurs as the Cs-137 continues to decay, re-establishing equilibrium in less than 1 hour.

Approximately 30 minutes after
elution, the residual activity of the Ba-137m sample has decayed to less than
one thousandth of its initial activity making it safe for disposal. When used
with the eluting solution supplied, bleed through of the parent Cs-137 is less
than 50 Bq/ml, affording a long working life. Each kit is supplied with the
generator, syringe, tube, 250ml of solution and a convenient storage case.

Thorium Lantern Mantles

These are the older type Thorium Lantern Gas Mantles, These can be used as a simple and convenient check source
for your Geiger Counter
The mantle's for camping lanterns, that are sold in stores now usually do not contain thorium. The mantles offered here will make a Geiger counter respond when placed next to the mantle. As a health concern , it should be mentioned that care should be taken and practiced while handling the Thorium mantle during any experiments or as a check source and in the general storage of the mantle

Alpha Radiation Viewer
Zinc Sulphide Scintillation Screen

SEE ALPHA RADIATION!
See Polonium 210 radiation with the naked eye, This special 1.75" screen is mounted in a cardboard frame for holding. Place your Alpha radiation source behind the screen in a darkened room and view the scintillations from the front .
This highly specialized Poly-crystalline Silver Activated Zinc Sulphide viewing screen with Crystal Clear backing, and mounted on cardboard frame
was handcrafted by George Dowell of GeoElectronic's Company.
The green glow can be viewed via a magnifying
eyepiece, or direct optically. Individual scintillations can be made out with
10X magnification and a good Alpha source, experiment with the distance form the
source to the screen for different effects.
As with all Spintahriscopes, the best viewing is in a darkened room, and time
must pass for the eyes to adjust to the dark, (about 5 minuntes) Always put the
powder side towards the radioacive source.
Use any strong Alpha emitter as one of our >
Polonium-210 sources
<
Use a 5 to 10 power loupe to observe the bright glow spot when the source is
close to the screen, or move the source back 1/4" and see the individual
scintillation sparkles.
To see what scintillation's can look like, please watch this video
This is a fascinating display to witness
